Sponsoring Organization:  Boston May Day Coalition, Committee for Peace and Human Rights, Massachusetts Peace Action, International Action Center – Boston, United Against War and Militarism, Assange Defense Boston, Workers World Party – Boston, Red Flag Boston, Pride at Work – Boston, Other groups welcome

Details of Actions:  The war makers in Washington are at it again. Tens of billions in weapons and military aid have been sent to Ukraine to fuel the carnage there with no end in sight. The corporate elites with Pentagon contracts are laughing all the way to the bank! Our taxes are footing the bill. The Ukraine war is escalating. The US is directly involved. The Army’s 101st Airborne Division has been deployed 3 miles from Ukraine’s border.
For decades US military action and economic intervention in Europe has been unassailable. This is no longer the case. In continuing the proxy war, the US has now committed to “total victory”, which neither side will achieve. Blowing up the Nord-stream pipelines has increased the danger. We are all at risk of nuclear war! Let’s celebrate Dr. King’s legacy by demanding an end to Washington’s proxy war.
Working people here have no interest in supporting US nuclear weapons nor the presence of 100,000 US troops in Europe. Bring them all back now! NATO is not defending us. It defends the profits of the billionaires here and in Europe. All this while we lack childcare, education, housing, and healthcare. This must end. Fund human needs, not the Pentagon! Join us!

Boston, Massachusetts

Location of Action:  Park Street, ‘T’ Station, Tremont St and Park Street
Boston

Date and Time of Action:  Saturday, January 21, 2023, 11:30 am

Sponsoring Organization:  Boston Area Assange Defense

Details of Actions:    Supporters of Julian Assange will gather at Park Street Station on the Boston Common on Saturday, January 21 from 11:30 to 12:30 to raise their voices for the embattled and endangered journalist and publisher Julian Assange.

For this rally, a special focus will be on the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, marking the 21st anniversary of its opening on January 11, 2002. This symbol of US lawlessness is still open despite WikiLeaks publishing the GITMO Files in 2011 showing the awful abuses of the detainees. Assange suffers similarly to the detainees as he is held in limbo, tortured, uncharged, un convicted, and his dire situation under-reported. If our media faithfully reported on Guantanamo and Assange’s incarceration it could quickly put an end to both.

Please join us on the 21st to call for an end to both these injustices. Hopefully we can celebrate Assange’s release soon as well as a just resolution of the quagmire at Guantanamo.

Signs, flags, and banners are available for vigil participants or vigil participants can bring signs to the peace vigil.
The vigil is in solidarity with the United National Antiwar Coalition’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Week of Action (Friday, January 13-Sunday, January 22) and the Peace in Ukraine Coalition’s two Weeks of Action (Friday, January 13-Friday, January 27).
For more information about the Weeks of Action, please visit www.unacpeace.org and peaceinukraine.org
The vigil supports a key demand of both Weeks of Action calling for a peace settlement to end the Ukraine War and an end to the U.S. providing military aid and training to the Ukrainian military. The vigil calls on the U.S. to support diplomatic efforts to peacefully end the Ukraine War.
The vigil will demand the immediate withdrawal of all U.S. forces from the Middle East, an end to U.S. drone assassinations, and the termination of U.S. support for Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirate’s brutal war on Yemen.
The vigil calls for an end to the U.S. sanctions regime and regime change operations. The vigil supports the U.S. using diplomacy which respects international law, national sovereignty, and the right to self-determination to peacefully resolve disputes with other nations.
The vigil supports major reductions in the U.S. military budget and using the funds for human needs and environmental protection.
Everyone is welcome to join the peace vigil. Please join us.

WHERE: Meet at MLK DART Station (look for our signs in the air) before joining the MLK Parade watchers.
MLK suggested that to end the war in Viet Nam, our government should: “Declare a unilateral cease-fire in the hope that such action will create the atmosphere for negotiation.” Surely, he would want the same for Ukraine.
In his 1964 Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech, MLK said, “I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality.”

Details of Actions:   Picket of PM Trudea’s Cabinet Caucus In Hamilton

The Hamilton Coalition to Stop The War (HCSW) is pleased to announce that it is planning to hold an informational picket in Hamilton of Prime Minister Trudeau’s cabinet caucus meeting. The picket is part of a North American week of protest to stop NATO wars and occupations.

In addition, the picket will also oppose the purchase by the Trudeau government of F-35 fighter jets whose lifetime expenses will cost Canadian taxpayers about $77b. CAD.

Doug Brown, co-chair of the HCSW, noted that “The Trudeau government’s F-35 purchase is a terrible waste of taxpayers’ money, for several reasons. First, these fighter jets aren’t designed primarily to defend Canada. Rather, they were developed to lock Canada into a US military command structure for offensive NATO operations overseas, just as Canadian F-18’s did so destructively in the former Yugoslavia and Libya, for example. Second, the lifetime costs of these war machines (plus those of purchasing new warships and drones) means that ordinary Canadians will be denied financial, environmental, and health security, as growing funds directed to military budgets means other budgets shrink. Third, the F-35’s enormous carbon footprint (60,000 litres of fuel per hour of flight) will effectively cancel out Canada’s ambitious carbon reduction goals.

Ken Stone, Coalition Treasurer, added that “The war in Ukraine is a US-proxy war that has been 30 years in the making – ever since the US and other NATO countries decided to break their promises to the last Soviet President Gorbachev that NATO would not expand one inch eastwards of a reunited Germany. Furthermore, the US and NATO (including unfortunately Canada) staged a coup in Ukraine in 2014 to overthrow the elected government of Victor Yanukovich, which coup put into power a government that waged war on its own Russian-speaking population in the Donbas, undermined the Minsk Agreements, and created the conditions for an inevitable war with the Russian Federation. This war, now in its 11th month, has the potential to mushroom into a wider European war and even into a nuclear confrontation with Russia. Instead of sending a new anti-aircraft missile system to Ukraine worth over $400m and 200 lightly armoured vehicles worth $90m CAD, Trudeau should seek to de-escalate the conflict and to engage Canadian diplomats in seeking a negotiated end to the conflict in Ukraine.”

Details of Actions:

The Australian Government has already committed over 400 million dollars to the US proxy war against Russia in Ukraine and Australia is the largest military funder outside of NATO. It has sent heavy weaponry and drones and is also training Ukrainian troops directly. The war in Ukraine has been used by the Albanese Government to make Australia a de facto member of NATO.

Ukraine has been turned into a killing field as the US, NATO and its allies have used the country as part of their long term plans of militarily encircling Russia. The US has made it clear that “victory” in Ukraine is not peace for the region but the military defeat of Russia in order to turn it into a semi-colony to be exploited by western imperialism.

Australia is also neck deep in US Imperialist war plans against China. The new AUKUS alliance with Britain and the US means 170 billion dollars will be spent on nuclear submarines. Nuclear armed B52s will be permanently in Australia in addition to the thousands of Marines and the spy and other military bases we already host.

Unless an international movement is mobilised the US and its allies are on a trajectory for a nuclear WW3. In Australia we must fight for the end of the US alliance, the end of AUKUS and the removal of all US bases. We must fight for the hundreds of billions being spent on planning to kill be spent on health and housing and the environment not on death machines.

This action coincides with an action in Sydney by Anti-War West Sydeny and is part of week of actions called by the United National Anti-War Coalition in the US

We are also planning a rally on February 25th in the city as part of a further international anti-war actions. Join us!

Location of Action:  Gathering on the steps of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building of the New York Public Library at 5th Avenue and 42nd Street; march to the United States Mission at 799 United Nations Plaza at First Avenue and 45th Street
Date and Time of Action:  Friday, January 20th, 2023, 12 Noon

Sponsoring Organization:  Peace Action, New York State, ‘Roses to Missions’

Details of Actions:   Join the Treaty Rally and March on Friday, January 20th, starting at 12 Noon at the New York Public Library steps on 5th Avenue and 42st Street and ending at the U.S. Mission on 1st Avenue and 45th Street.    Send a firm message to the U.S. Mission that the U.S. should join the Treaty.

SUMMARY:

On Friday, January 20, 2023, a coalition of antinuclear groups will celebrate the second anniversary of the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW or the Ban Treaty). The Treaty that entered into force two years ago established a categorical ban on nuclear weapons under international law.

In New York City, during the week of January 16, volunteer members of Peace Action NYS, Manhattan Project for a Nuclear-Free World, and many other organizations will celebrate the anniversary by delivering roses and thank-you certificates to the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of those state parties that ratified the Treaty after January 20, 2022. (The members will be complying with the CDC’s and New York State’s COVID guidelines.)

On Friday, January 20, there will also be a rally in front of the New York Public Library at noon followed by a march to the U.S. Mission at 799 United Nations Plaza to deliver the message that the United States must join the Treaty.

“It’s important to promote the Ban Treaty and to persuade the U.S. to sign it at this particular time, because the world is now embroiled, since the invasion of Ukraine, in the worst nuclear emergency since the Cuban Missile Crisis of October 1962,” said Jack Baldwin of The Manhattan Project for a Nuclear-Free World. “Two nuclear-armed superpowers are locked in a deadly confrontation in which nuclear weapons have not been taken off the table. The whole concept of nuclear weapons as a deterrent has been disproved by this new European war.”

Said June Tano, Morningside Monthly Meeting of Religious Society of Friends: “In the process of acquiring and maintaining nuclear weapons, the nuclear-armed states have long tormented their own people and the people of the non-nuclear countries. The earth has also been heavily contaminated with nuclear material. Possession of nuclear weapons must be recognized as both a human rights violation and an environmental issue. I truly respect those countries that had the courage to ratify the TPNW.”

“Roses to Missions is an inspirational event,” said Sylvia Rodriguez Case, Co-Chair of Peace Action Fund of NYS. “It’s a great joy to celebrate the courage and bravery of the nine countries that have ratified the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons this past year by visiting their missions to the U.N. to thank them in person. To date, 68 state parties have signed and ratified the TPNW. This keeps hope alive for a world free from nuclear weapons.”

MLK’s anti-war and anti-imperialist legacy has been erased from history books. MLK reminded us that “the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today is my own government.” Everyone wants to claim his legacy but very few want to practice what he preached. Learn the truth! Join us for a discussion on MLK’s anti-war, anti-militarist positions, including his opposition to the U.S. war against Vietnam, which caused liberal news publications like the New York Times to smear and attack him.

“The greatest purveyor of violence in the world : My own Government, I can not be Silent.” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. April 4, 1967
Hold the date for a discussion with activists involved in struggles right here in Philly and participate in building an anti-war coalition in our city.
As Martin Luther King, Jr. so correctly reminded us, the U.S. is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world. Since WWII, the US has initiated more than 60 military interventions in foreign countries. The US/NATO proxy war in Ukraine, whose origins reside in the 2014 US-backed-fascist led coup that replaced the elected Ukrainian government, brings the US in direct confrontation with a major nuclear power as does the U.S. provocation against China over Taiwan.
Come out to say: NO MORE WARS! NO NATO! FUND OUR COMMUNITIES!

In addition to death and destruction abroad, the costs of wars create poverty in our communities. As US tax money is wasted on Pentagon aggression, the underfunding of housing, healthcare and education causes untold harm to our youth, seniors and especially communities of color.
Come out to say: NO MORE WARS! NO NATO! FUND OUR COMMUNITIES!

Join us during Martin Luther King Jr. week to stand for peace against NATO war making

Confusion over NATO’s role in instigating the war in Ukraine has many people supporting Ukraine’s war on Russian-speakers rather than holding our own government accountable. Narrative management by mainstream media and social media means that many who are confused don’t receive information or analysis about NATO expansion and the arming of Europe to fight Russia.

The heightened threat of nuclear war makes it urgent to speak up against U.S. war policies now.

Banners and signs are welcome but we request that no flags be displayed at the vigil.

The prison was opened on January 11, 2002, twenty-one years ago. Over 30 people remain there, even though most of the active military aspects of the “war on terror” have subsided, hundreds of prisoners have been released, and many have never been charged with a crime. All over the world, Guantanamo is seen as a blemish on human rights, including its history of torture and endless incarceration.
